Each time we return to this site we find that new items have been discovered as prominent constructions are revealed. Come and see this ancient city that remains a great example and warning for many of us today.

Ever wonder why so many mosques have domes and arches? The style is adopted from Eastern Orthodox Church architecture. As the Ottomans conquered what is modern day Türkiye, they would often 'repurpose' the Orthodox churches for mosques. When building new mosques, this design was usually repeated. Pictured here is one of the repurposed Orthodox Churches in our Fatih district which is home to many such repurposed churches. Today this ancient church is the Kalenderhane Mosque. Next to the mosque is a portion of the Roman Aqueduct of Valens. When visiting the university area of Fatih, there is a very interesting mosque that you might visit - helpful for learning more about our neighbors here. Süleymaniye mosque is one of the most famous in all of Türkiye. Probably completed in 1560, this mosque was a great feat of the Ottomans, perhaps seeking to pass the Roman structures that made up most of Fatih's grandeur. We enjoy visiting here in the morning, followed by a cup of Turkish tea while looking out over the Golden Horn, before descending on the street bazaar.
